To post an image in an entry, the image needs to be located on the internet. An image on your computer won't display to other users.
Dreamwidth has an image hosting service that you can use to host your images. There are also free image hosting services such as Flickr (by Yahoo!) or Instagram. You can also upload the image to your own webspace. Images posted on Facebook generally won't work in a Dreamwidth entry.
To post an image, you'll need to know the image location URL. In most browsers, you can get the image location by right-clicking on the image and choosing "Copy image location" or "Copy image address".
The HTML tag to post an image is <img src="IMAGE URL">. Replace IMAGE URL with the image's URL.
To make your entries more accessible to people who can't view images, add a text description (also known as "alt text") to the image tag. To post an image with alt text, use the HTML tag <img src="IMAGE URL" alt="ALT TEXT">
If you use Dreamwidth's image hosting, any text included in the Short Description field will be used as alt text in the HTML the site gives you to post. We have some tips on writing alt text that will help your descriptions be as useful as possible to people who can't view images.

Dreamwidth's image hosting service is available to all Dreamwidth account holders. You can upload images either by posting by email, or by using the web interface. Currently supported image formats are .gif, .jpg, and .png.
All users have a quota of how much disk space they can use. Free accounts can upload 500 MB of images, paid accounts can upload 1.5 GB, and premium paid accounts can upload 3 GB.
To upload images using the web interface, go to the Upload Images page. You can set the security of the image and provide a title and alt text for the image. HTML is provided for you to paste into entries.
To post an image to your journal by emailing it to the site, you need to make sure that you've set up posting by email. Once you've set that up, you can attach an image file to an email post. The image will be posted exactly as we receive it and won't be resized. The image will be posted at the end of the entry. Any text you include in the email after you attach the image won't be included in your entry.
You can upload multiple images at once by attaching multiple image files to the email.
If you're posting a large image, multiple images, or images containing content which could be considered offensive, consider adding adding a <cut> tag to the end of the entry text. This will hide the images behind the cut.
You can describe the image in the body of the entry, or edit the entry to include alt text to describe the image.
Images will be posted with the same security as the entry in which they are initially posted. For example, if your entry is posted as access-only, the image will only be viewable to members of your access list. If no security is specified in the email post, it will take the journal's default security.
Once an image has been uploaded, you can edit the image's security or delete the image from the Manage Images page.
You can embed images you've hosted on Dreamwidth in your own journal, in other journals, in communities, in comments, and on other Livejournal and Livejournal-based sites like InsaneJournal, but Dreamwidth does not allow images to be embedded on other non LJ-related sites.

To post a video or audio clip in an entry, you must make sure that the media is hosted somewhere on the internet. Media which is only on your computer will not display correctly to anyone else.
To embed a video, upload it from your computer to a video hosting service. Two popular free video hosting services are YouTube and Vimeo.
To embed an audio clip, upload it from your computer to an audio clip hosting site. One such site is SoundCloud.
To post the media, locate the "Share" button on the page of the video you would like to post. Then, select the "embed" option. Copy the code that the site provides. Each site's embedding code is a little different, so you may need to look at the instructions provided by your media hosting service.
If you are using the HTML editor, you will simply paste the code into your entry.
If you are using the Rich Text Editor, you will select the image that looks like a CD, and paste the code there.
For security reasons, we have to enable embedding from each media host individually. The hosts listed here have permission to load embedded content on our site. If one of these doesn't work for you, or the host you would prefer to use isn't listed here, open a support request and include the embedding code you're trying to use.

» What are image and video placeholders?
Image and video placeholders replace images and videos that would otherwise appear on your reading page.
You may want to use image and video placeholders if your friends regularly post large images or videos that stretch your reading page, or if you're reading in public and your friends regularly post images that you don't want appearing on your screen where others can see, for instance.
To enable image and video placeholders, go to the Display tab of Account Settings.
To enable video placeholders, check the box labelled "Replace videos embedded in journals with a placeholder icon". All videos will then be replaced by a placeholder.
To enable image placeholders, select your preference in the drop-down labelled "Replace images of known size on your Reading Page with a placeholder for". The choices are "nothing (display all images)", which is the default; "all images", which will replace all images; "medium images (over 320x240)", which will replace all images that declare their size to be greater than 320 pixels by 240 pixels; and "large images (over 640x480)", which will replace all images that declare their size to be greater than 640 pixels by 480 pixels.
If someone doesn't include the height and width attributes for the image when posting it, the site doesn't guess how large the image is. You can choose how the site treats images with unknown dimensions right after you choose your image placeholder setting, using the drop-down labelled "Replace images of unknown size with a placeholder". If you choose "never", images without a size specified will never be replaced with a placeholder. If you choose "always", images without a size specified will always be replaced with a placeholder.
To show an image or video that's been replaced by a placeholder, click the placeholder.
